The Australian Furniture Association (aka Australasian Furnishing Association) is recognised as the peak industry organisation for the furnishing sector supply chain in Australia. Collectively the industry employs more than 250,000 Australians directly and up to 500,000 indirectly. With an estimated value of $27.4 billion, the furnishing industry is an important contributor to the economic well-being and wealth of the nation.
In this one hour briefing learn how The Furniture360 project aims to engage industry to champion design solutions to eliminate furniture waste and reduce chemicals of concern, as well as progress product stewardship initiatives to support the Furniture Industry as it transitions into a Circular Economy for future security and sustainability. The objectives of the Furniture 360 Project are to engage industry to develop solutions to: Promote sustainable actions throughout the lifecycle of furniture products to support a “circular economy”.
Design out waste and toxin pollution to reduce the impact and reliance on Australian landfill. Reduce environmental and human health impacts of commercial furnishing products, by eliminating harmful chemicals from the manufacturing process. Prevent waste generation through better design, responsible material selection and maintenance programs.
Establish an industry led Product Stewardship solution and implementation plan. Key elements of the project include reporting on current and proposed industry issues including, but not restricted to, meeting and developing standards, improving furniture reuse and repair, ensuring effective recycling and maximising product durability. The research team will investigate overseas precedents, innovation and future industry linkages and current recycling activity in Australia.
Specific outcomes of the Furnture360 program include: Reviewing Product Stewardship Schemes and opportunities Auditing specific industry furniture challenges and opportunities Developing a training and accreditation program for new initiatives Creating a Furniture and furnishing’s Product Stewardship Network Establishing an Australian Furniture Industry Produce Stewardship Council Establishing a website and social media presence Finalising a 3-year business plan
